What you can expect?
Your questions about menopause, answered.
What is perimenopause?
Perimenopause is a transitional phase where the ovaries gradually reduce their function. Ovulation becomes inconsistent before ceasing altogether. During this time, menstrual cycles may become longer, and bleeding patterns can be irregular until the occurrence of the final menstrual period. The final period is marked as the last menstrual period, confirmed when there is no menstrual bleeding for 12 consecutive months afterward.
How long does perimenopause last?
Perimenopause often starts during a woman's 40s and may continue for four to eight years. Menopause typically occurs around age 51, though it can begin slightly earlier or later for some individuals. Symptoms can persist for ten years or longer, with certain issues, such as vaginal dryness, potentially remaining indefinitely.
When does menopause begin?
Menopause begins 12 months after the last menstrual period.
What are common symptoms of perimenopause/menopause?
Common symptoms include hot flashes, mood changes such as depression, genital and urinary discomfort, cognitive issues like brain fog, along with skin and hair changes.
What are vasomotor symptoms (VMS)?
VMS are a group of symptoms that include hot flashes and night sweats, and are a common part of menopause. They are caused by hormonal changes that disrupt the body's temperature regulation. VMS can last 5 to 7 years, but may persist for decades or even lifelong in up to 15% of women
What are Genital & Urinary symptoms (GMS)?
GUS refers to a collection of symptoms affecting the genital and urinary tract of women in perimenopause/menopause. Decline in estrogen levels leads to vaginal dryness, irritation, burning, frequent urination, and sometimes painful intercourse.
What is the cause of symptoms during perimenopause/menopause?
Symptoms result from fluctuations in hormone levels within the body. Elevated estrogen can lead to symptoms similar to those experienced with PMS, while lower estrogen levels may trigger hot flashes or night sweats. These hormonal shifts can overlap with regular menstrual cycles.
How can I get relief from these symptoms?
Treatment options range from hormone therapy and antidepressants to positive lifestyle adjustments. These approaches can not only relieve symptoms but also support overall well-being by addressing the broader effects of hormonal changes on your health.
